Genes and Lifestyle Affect Chemical Sensitivities

Mar 16, 2010

Whitfield, JB, V Dy, R McQuilty, G Zhu, AC Heath, GW Montgomery and NG Martin. Genetic effects on toxic and essential elements in humans: arsenic, cadmium, copper, lead, mercury, selenium and zinc in erythrocytes. Environmental Health Perspectives http://dx.doi.org/10.1289/ehp.090154.

Although the level of exposure to toxic substances certainly matters, a person’s genes and lifestyle can significantly affect how harmful the toxic compounds can become.

Fluoride Chemicals May Increase Lead Accumulation, Say Researchers

March 16, 2010

Fluoride chemicals added to public water supplies, boosts lead absorption in lab animals' bones, teeth and blood, report Sawan, et al. (Toxicology 2/2010). Earlier studies already show children's blood-lead-levels are higher in fluoridated communities, reports Sawan's research team.

"…exposure to increased amounts of lead and fluoride occurs at about the same age (1-3 years)… Therefore, this is a critical time when systemic exposure to fluoride should be minimized since fluoride may increase lead accumulation," the researchers caution.

Pollutants Linked to Diabetes

February 5, 2010

At Grassy Narrows and Wabaseemoong First Nations in Ontario, Canada, many people have been diagnosed with Minamata disease (mercury poisoning). Many people in these two communities also have Type 2 diabetes.

New Study Suggests Lead Exposure Could Cause ADHD

January 28, 2010

A new study suggests it may be a good idea to consider chelation therapy, which removes unwanted metals from the body, as lead may be one of the main contributors to attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).

The findings published in Current Directions in Psychological Science indicate that genes may be the cause of 70 percent of hyperactivity cases within children. Researchers were determined to figure out the cause of the other 30 percent, leading them to look closely into lead, which is a commonly known detrimental material to health.

Well, Well, Well: Vaccines and Autism

If we’re to believe CNN’s Campbell Brown brought us the whole story with her February 12 coverage of the immunization controversy, the only cause for concern is the one posed by parents opting out of vaccine programs. And if we’re to believe Newsweek’s Sharon Begley (“Anatomy of a Scare,” February 21, 2009), the entire controversy was built on a house of cards that has now been demolished.

EDTA Chelation Shown Effective For Correcting Mercury Induced Neurological Damage

Mercury is a well known neurotoxin that comes in various forms. Scientists have learned that all forms of mercury have the potential for toxicity. Mercury intoxication has been increasingly linked to neurological disorders, including autism.

Though the body may rid itself of small amounts of mercury through natural processes, larger amounts received in mercury containing pharmaceuticals or through environmental exposures may result in long-term mercury toxicity.

Chelation Therapy - Topic Overview

What is chelation therapy?
Chelation therapy is a chemical process in which a synthetic solution-EDTA (ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid)-is injected into the bloodstream to remove heavy metals and/or minerals from the body. Chelation means "to grab" or "to bind." When EDTA is injected into the veins, it "grabs" heavy metals and minerals such as lead, mercury, copper, iron, arsenic, aluminum, and calcium and removes them from the body. Except as a treatment for lead poisoning, chelation therapy is controversial and unproved.

Heavy Metal Intoxication and Body Weight

If you want to attain your ideal weight and improve your health in the process you need to start with detoxification. Everything in our bodies is interrelated so you really can't change something without changing something else. Let's consider one example of such interrelationship: heavy metal intoxication and weight problems. How are they related?

Autism is a complex neurological disorder that falls under the realm of a group of disorders known as pervasive developmental disorders. There is no known specific cause and it occurs in all racial, ethnic and social groups.
